Moving Forward

So, I have had an incredibly busy year and am well aware that I haven’t been giving this blog the love and attention that it deserves for quite some time. In fact, in one sense, Digital Flair is no more. Alternatively, you could say that it has blossomed; check out www.digitalflair.tv to see my latest creative endeavour - one that I am so far very proud of.

To aid the google pagerank of my new baby, and to lessen general confusion, this blog has been renamed ‘Creative Flair’ for now. I have some great ideas for posts here but never seem to have the time to get them out of my head. Hopefully I will find some time soon. Until then, anyone interested in my goings on in the digital realm should follow my personal blog, where I’ve managed to keep updated with info on the various projects and excursions I find myself a part of. Thanks so much for reading and hopefully I’ll be able to post some more positive news here soon.

The Incident

This is the second post in the Limitation = Inspiration series: Here I’m taking a look at a particular iOS app that has embraced the limitations of the platform and been designed to use them to its advantage. See the first post for more information on the topic.

I’m sure many readers are already familiar with The Incident - one of the year’s most addictive iOS games.

For those that aren’t, here’s the premise: You play as Frank, an innocent bystander caught up in an unexplained global incident which has caused everyday objects to rain from the sky. Using tilt controls, you must control Frank to dodge falling objects and use the ever-growing pile of debris to climb as high as possible.

Limitation = Inspiration

It’s no great secret that a solid set of limitations or roadblocks can provide new sources of inspiration and creativity; and while I will look more in depth at how this applies to the area of mobile software design and development, it is equally true of all creative practices.

Whilst this is obviously not something unique to the digital realm, the huge potential and versatility provided by digital technology has been responsible for some fantastic breakthroughs over the last few decades.

Dribbble & Dunk

Monsters! Highlighted shots from Von Glitschka & Max Steenbergen

For those that aren’t familiar with Dribbble, here’s a quick summary: Dribbble is an invite-only social network & community of artists , designers and other creatives who routinely share 400 x 300 pixel snippets of their works-in-progress with eachother for critique and praise.

The concept of Dribbble is built around a basketball metaphor: Members become ‘players’, and their works their ‘shots’. An interesting feature that I’ve seen help generate inspiration and creativity on a number of occasions is the ability for a player to ‘rebound’ shots of their own or others with slightly refined or related work.

Welcome

Welcome to Digital Flair, a new blog devoted to those with a knack for using digital technology in new, innovative, sometimes unheard of, (sometimes unintended), and ultimately creative ways.

I’ve long been fascinated by the possibilities afforded to an ever-growing number of people by all kinds of digital technology. Whilst the powerful combination of imagination, software & hardware of all kinds and the internet has created huge numbers of passionate artistic communities the world over, I am more interested in finding both individual examples of creatives using their digital tools in new ways to create new things, and general thoughts and opinions on modern creative practices and philosophies.

Hopefully this blog will soon provide a small showcase of new and interesting art, video, music, web apps, software, and whatever else people are pushing the envelope with out there.
